Well, nothing beats a hometown Brier, except maybe winning a hometown Brier! Needless to say, we were all very excited to be in Calgary representing Alberta! The Brier festivities started off well for us as we received our custom made Sam Abouhassan suits for the banquet on Friday night! Benny had played golf with Sam at an event this past summer and Sam had offered to help us out with some suits if we made it to the Brier. We did, and he did! If you ever need a custom suit, check out Sam in Edmonton.
As always, the Brier starts off a little slow with team practice and the Hot Shots. We had a few hot shots in the preliminary round but quickly fizzled out in the playoffs of the Hot Shots and turned our focus to the round robin. We started off with our first game against BC, skipped by one of the truly great guys on tour, Jim Cotter. Jimmy took us down in the extra end with a highlight reel double raise takeout for the win. We didn’t realize it at the time, but this was a theme of things to come for Team Alberta at this edition of the Tim Horton’s Brier. We ran into some stiff competition at what was the deepest field in Brier history and also ran into some very hot skips that came up with some amazing shots when they needed them most. Gushue’s miracle shot to beat us was so great, it dominated the 1 V 1 highlight reel on Sportscentre for a week after the Brier (at time of writing, it’s still the Champion) making Sportscentre my least favourite show on TV lately!;)
We battled extremely hard all week and gave it everything we had each and every time we hit the ice but it just wasn’t in the cards for us this week. We finished the round robin with a 6-5 record, one game out of the playoffs. Obviously we had higher hopes and expectations heading into the week but we will always look back on the 2015 Brier in Calgary with fond memories of the support we received from the crowds and people of Calgary! Thank you to all who supported us and the event in Calgary! And a very special thank you to our families and our amazing sponsors who have supported us all year and continue to support us in our quest for 2018! We couldn’t do it without you.
We hope to be back wearing the Alberta colours in 2016 in Ottawa and we’re prepared to work even harder this off season and next year to make that a reality. Lots of great lessons learned in Calgary as we continue to develop as a team and find our identity and keys to success.
Until next time……..
