After a great weekend of practice in Edmonton, we were off to Wainwright for our biggest event of the year, Alberta provincials aka The Boston Pizza Cup. Winning this event is the only chance we have of getting to the Brier in our hometown of Calgary.
Before getting to Wainwright, we made a stop in Camrose to teach a junior clinic that was put on by our title sponsor, Meridian Manufacturing. It was a great day, and in celebration of Meridian’s 50th Anniversary, the clinic hosted 50 eager kids. A great dinner at Stockmens Chophouse (highly recommend) with our Meridian friends to finish off the evening, and then on our way to Wainwright.
Our spiel started with a real tough opponent, St Albert’s Jamie King. This experienced team includes friends, old teammates, and even family (my brother Glen plays lead). We knew it was going to be a tough test, but we were excited to get the event underway. We played real well, scored a three in the second end and survived a late push by Kinger and the boys to hold on for our first win. Another tough game awaited us in the morning against James Pahl, but first we had to watch a few more episodes of Suits! Ben and Brent have been watching this show for a couple seasons and decided it was time for me and Koe to start watching as well. We got hooked quick, and watched 26 episodes in 5 days! Great show.....and also a great distraction from the stress and pressure of a big event.
Pahl gave us a great game and even held the lead on us after 5 ends. Some great shooting by Lainger in the 6th set us up for a 4 ender and we never looked back. Onto the A-Final against Brock Virtue. A great young team that features Benny’s cousin DJ Kidby playing lead. We got off to another great start with a deuce in the first, and we managed to control the rest of the game. Winning the A-event is huge, as it ensures you have hammer and choice of rocks in the 1-2 Page playoff game, and also gives you a couple days rest so you are fresh for the playoffs. It also meant time for a Suits marathon!
After a very relaxing couple of days watching the other teams ginding it out, we were ready for the 1-2 game against former World Junior champ Brendan Bottcher. Another solid team game and a draw to the four foot by Kev guaranteed us a spot in the final on Sunday. First year as a team and we were one game away from a hometown Brier.....All you can ask for.
Sunday’s final was the Kevin Koe show!! His big game experience showed as he carried us on his back and led us to victory. Off to the Brier we go!!! A great team effort all week and hopefully we can keep it going in a couple weeks in Calgary. Thank you to the Town of Wainwright for a great event. And thanks to the host committee and all the volunteers for all their hard work to make the BP cup a tremendous success. Also to Jamie Bourassa and the rest of the ice crew for some of the best ice we’ve played on in years. Looking forward to the same conditions in Calgary.
Cheers and see you at the Brier!!
